Kinda funny, but shopping for gifts is what actually makes the holidays real for me. There are years when my financial situation doesn't allow me to shop for gifts, and that just seems to put me in a funk. So being able to put smiles on the faces of the ones I love means a lot to me and increases my own pleasure in the holidays!

Each year I volunteer to help with "Shop with a Cop" where police officers take children from families having a hard time and buy them some presents for Christmas. It never seems like Christmas until then; the excitement of having a police officer take you shopping is infectious. I'm always "in the spirit" after our shopping trip.

The holidays are real to me when my mom bakes cinnamon rolls before everyone begins opening presents. The whole family congregates in the kitchen, groggy-eyed but happy, Christmas music in the background and the smell of cinnamon rolls slowly filling the house.

Family makex the holidays "real" for me. My husband's previous job required that he be gone most of Christmas the last three years. He has a new job, and despite the dramatic pay decrease, this year will be the best Christmas because he is with us!
